Steve Ela Joins the National Organic Coalition
Steve Ela has joined the National Organic Coalition to lead our work with the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). Steve brings a wealth of experience in his new role with NOC as a farmer, and as the former chairperson of the NOSB.
“NOC is thrilled to welcome Steve Ela to our team. Steve brings an incredible background and deep knowledge of the organic regulations and NOSB process”, said Abby Youngblood, Executive Director at the National Organic Coalition. “Steve’s commitment to advancing organic principles and his scientific background are tremendous assets in NOC’s work with the NOSB.”
Steve is the owner and operator of Ela Family Farms in western Colorado. The farm produces 55 varieties of organic tree fruits and has been fully organic since 2004 (they began transitioning in 1994). Steve has undergraduate degrees in biology and environmental geology and an M.S. in Soil Science. He has been involved in many on-farm research trials on his farm, focusing on wide ranging topics including organic insect and pest control, weed control, soil fertility, and apple thinning.
NOC’s deep engagement with the NOSB is critical as we seek to protect the integrity of the organic program. Steve is well positioned to lead these efforts in partnership with NOC Members.
