1890 Land Grant Institution Scholarship Program

Developed by NOC Advisor Jennifer Taylor

March 5th, 2021

The National Organic Coalition (NOC) is launching a new scholarship fund available to students at the 1890 Land Grant University, Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University during the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. Four students interested in organic food systems will each be awarded a $750 scholarship. The application deadline for students to apply is April 19th, 2021 and scholarship awards will be announced in June 2021.

“We look forward to developing our partnership with Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University.” said Jennifer Taylor, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the FAMU Small Farms Program – CE in the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences (CAFS) at Florida A&M University and Advisor to the National Organic Coalition.

“The National Organic Coalition is thrilled to launch this program at Florida A&M University,” said Abby Youngblood, Executive Director of the National Organic Coalition. “Our intent is to build pathways for students at 1890 Land Grant Institutions to explore careers in organic agriculture and to contribute to creating a healthier, more sustainable food system.”

In addition to financial support, which can be used by students at their discretion, scholarship recipients will have the option of being paired with mentors from an organic agriculture or policy organization, taking part in organic agriculture meetings and conferences, and applying for paid internships in the organic sector.

Organic agriculture holds great promise in addressing the myriad health and environmental challenges we currently face. But if the organic movement is to succeed in creating a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable food system, it will require talent, expertise, and input from all communities, most especially the next generation of leaders from Florida A&M University. Organic provides an array of career pathways, including agriculture, advocacy, business, marketing, research, and education.
